Minet Country Park Activities
Many tonnes of topsoil have been tipped on the site to effect landscaping & create small hills.
In April 2003, local schools came to plant trees on these, & in time a bare grassy mound will become a woodland.
These photos show the enthusiastic youngsters at work.
The holes were pre-drilled by council gardeners.
Supervision was by A Rocha staff & volunteers.
The trees planted were mainly large shrubs, & included:
Silver birch, dog rose, field maple, wayfaring tree, holly.
The youngsters had to brave a bitter north wind as they did their work,
& a hailstorm started soon after one class arrived.
Happily this passed over very quickly & work was not hindered.
This cold snap is called "blackthorn winter" and sure enough, blackthorn was out in abundance.

Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa)
Sadly, the 2003 drought meant that few of the trees survived.
Replanting took place in the following winter, & healthy saplings can again be seen.
