I have lived about 2-3 miles from the Minet site for over 40 years.
I have had a keen interest in both ecology & nature study for many years.
These pages are my observations & photos of the 'A Rocha' project for the last few years.
Most have been taken by myself on the site,
although a few highly specialised photos have been taken nearby
or using specimens taken home for observation.
The Minet Country Park is under development by the London Borough of Hillingdon.
Many of the photos included were taken before the development commenced.
You will see how much progress has been made, & how the development is progressing.
Many changes have taken place, & we look forward eagerly,
both to watching the changes, & influencing them.

This is how a large 'pond' or widened drainage ditch appeared before it was cleared.
The reed mace (bull rushes) are hiding a vast quantity of old car tyres, scrap & other rubbish.
Rubbish blown from the car boot sale accumulated here. It had to be cleared.

The overgrown pond was completely cleared of both rubbish & desirable vegetation.
Now the pond can develop naturally, with guidance & care,
& sensitive & appropriate planting.
I look forward to watching the growth of vegetation in & around the pond.
I will be
pond dipping to study the underwater wild life.Hopefully there will be a safe pond-dipping platform for school children.
Dipping on April 17 2003 I found plenty of water fleas (daphnia & ostrocods) around the remaining patch of reed mace, but no mayfly larvae. Mayfly larvae used to be present, before the landscaping & are indicators of well oxygenated water. The clearance & landscaping has so far resulted in pollution & loss of healthy pond-dwelling species. See
pond dipping. As the year has progressed, the range of water life has increased.
